<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: center;">Leash Collar Training Made Easy
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The Quickest way to leash train a puppy. Items you will will need:
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">A slip collar, choker collar or pinch collar. A normal dog collar will do the job but not as swiftly. This method performs with in 1 to three try's with a choker collar.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> 1 six to ten foot leash.( ideally leather) one particular that is not going to stretch.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> Start out with your puppy in the sitting position on your right side. Facing the identical course.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> give a fast tug on the leash about one foot from the choker. At the exact same time give the command "HEEL!" then start out walking. As very long as he stays by your facet, pet him and inform him he is a excellent boy!

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">As your puppy commences to velocity up and get in front of you, permit him. As he is about to carry the leash tout. Say "HEEL" and do an about deal with(flip the opposite direction) and end with your back again to your puppy.

Your puppy will consider." Oh we are heading that way." And turn all-around. Be cautious. You don"t want to damage him. Just get his awareness again on you. When he returns to you. Make him sit. Praise HIM! Repeat steps one nevertheless three. Most dogs master to heel from this system with in the third try out.

If it has been much more than three or four days because your past walk and schooling session. You may perhaps want a refresher. This also operates greatest with little distractions. (an open area deserted street)

Satisfied coaching. Sounds horrible, but dread not! It is an straightforward resolve, if you know how to fix it.

A puppy pulls on it really is leash, simply because somewhere in it really is existence, it was allowed to pull on the leash. This upsets the total stability in between canine and owner. It reverses the role in the dog's head to, "I command the walks, my operator controls every little thing else."

It's significantly like the saying, "I give him and inch and he requires a mile." The puppy was allowed to get absent with the conduct, so now it thinks that is the way of the earth, or the way of the stroll if you will. But the dog is improper. The walk is not it is really, the stroll is YOURS and the dog is accompanying you. The 1st time you place the leash on, permit your puppy walk close to with it for say two minutes. Then take it off, pat and praise it, and offer you a yummy treat. Then reattach later on for 10 minutes. Maintain executing this -- attach, wait a when, consider off, treat -- until he or she gets used to it.

The future action is to hold your conclude of the leash and let your dog get utilized to you walking with him or her. The notion here is to allow it lead you close to the home. Don't pull at the leash or leave so a lot slack that it drags on the ground, just make it like a game. You want this to be a good knowledge for your dog.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8073233787487844013.post-80005308613494329952011-06-12T23:15:00.000-07:002011-06-12T23:15:47.924-07:00Stop Your Dog From Barking Without Using Collar
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Use Anti Bark Collar to Stop your Dog From Barking
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">A number of pet owners today make an effort to prevent their dogs from generating nuisance barking with the help of an anti bark dog collar. They think that the employment of a dog training course is too long or the training expense is expensive. Some believe that their dog is so stubborn in order to be trained by any other way. The fact is that most dogs can control their barking without you having to use any anti bark dog collar.

First of all, you should know that anti bark dog collars nowadays use high pitched sound, static shock, or natural oil in order to control irritating barking from a dog. Whenever your dog barks above a certain decibel, vibrations generated from his barking will move through the collar and activate it. Once your dog gets irritating corrective signals, he will tend to stop the barking so that he can stay away irritating jolts as much as possible.

A lot of pet trainers report that the anti-bark collars work perfectly for them in most case, but there are still some issues when using these kinds of collars. The first one is the training cannot remain its result in a long period of time if you stop using the collar. Manufacturers that create these no bark collars also say that the dogs must wear the collar regularly in order for his barking to be controlled effectively. It is also cruel and inhumane if you intend to use a shock collar since these collars work by releasing electric shock, which can hurt the dog. Just think about how you feel once you get this kind of shock from the collar. The next disadvantage of using a no bark dog collar is most of the collars cannot find out the difference between an irritating barking and helpful barking. If the dog barks, he gets corrective signals. This means if there is a robber trying to get into your house, the dog will not generate any alert notice because of punishment he gets from the collar. This is really a last thing you want to happen, right?

With that being said, you should consider carefully before deciding to use any dog bark control aid in order to prevent nuisance barking. It is true that bark control training course can work on almost any kind of dogs. Besides, the training is usually affordable and provides quick results. There are situations that a dog can be trained in a few days. If you are short for money, you can choose to invest in training manuals, which are inexpensive instead of spending money on expensive behavior training classes.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8073233787487844013.post-37606584123897101222011-06-04T23:50:00.000-07:002011-06-04T23:50:46.393-07:00Learn On How To Choose a Dog Trainer

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Guidelines for Choosing a Dog Trainer

Searching for someone to help you with your dog’s training or behavior problem is
something you should take seriously. You want your children’s teacher to be well
educated and professionally trained; not just someone who loves children and likes to
teach. If your child was having behavior or learning problems in school you’d seek out a
counselor or psychologist who was professionally educated and trained.
Seek out help for your dog from the same perspective. Don’t rely on who is the most
visible or does the best marketing in your community. Evaluate the credentials of the
people who you considering. Your dog is going to be a part of your family for likely well
over 10 years so investing in the best help available is worth it. Your dog’s life may
literally depend on it.

1.You should know that because there is no licensing for dog trainers or behavior
consultants in the U.S., anyone can use any professional title they choose. Just
because someone calls themselves a “behaviorist” doesn’t mean they’ve had any
formal education in the science of animal behavior. Popular terms are behavior
consultant, dog or cat behaviorist, dog trainer, and even behavior therapist (a term
which in some states may be illegal because the “therapist” designation is a term
protected through state licensing). Read on to see which terms are protected.
‰ Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist is a protected term that refers ONLY to those
individuals certified by the Animal Behavior Society. Anyone using this term who is
NOT ABS certified is doing so illegally, and this should be brought to the attention of
the Society.

2 Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorists are veterinarians who have received post
graduate training in behavior and have meet the criteria of the American College of
Veterinary Behaviorists. These individuals can also call themselves “behavior
specialists”. Other veterinarians can NOT use the term “specialist” unless they are
board certified. Unfortunately, non-veterinarians can use the term “behavior
specialist” regardless of their education or experience. Learn more at
www.veterinarybehaviorists.org. Veterinarians with a special interest in animal
behavior may be members of AVSAB.

3. The only certification program for dog trainers that requires passage of an
independently administered examination is the Certification Council for Professional
Dog Trainers.

4. Ask if the trainer or behavior consultant is certified, and if so by whom. You should
know the name of the certifying body, how long they’ve been in existence, what the
criteria for certification are, and whether the certification is independent of a specific
training or educational program. “Certification” that comes as the result of someone
graduating from a for-profit training program is not what you’re looking for because
there is no independent evaluation of the person’s credentials.

5. Ask trainers what type of training they received, and from where, to become a
professional trainer, how long they’ve been training professionally, and what kind of
experience they have. Ask behavior consultants how they acquired their knowledge
about behavior, and how they learned to be a behavior consultant. Look for academic
training from accredited colleges or universities in animal learning and ethology, as
well as supervised practical training.

6. Look for both trainers and behavior consultants who hold memberships in
professional organizations and who pursue continuing education. This indicates
individuals who are interested in keeping current on the latest advances in their fields.

7. Both dog trainers and behavior consultants are really educating and training people,
so look for individuals with good communication and social skills, who you feel
comfortable talking to. Look for professionals who treat both people and dogs with
respect and compassion. The Animal Behavior Society, the American Veterinary
Medical Association and the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers all
have ethical statements and guidelines on their websites.

8. Choose trainers and behavior consultants who focus on encouraging and rewarding
the right behavior with positive reinforcement, rather than relying on punishing or
correcting undesirable ones. Both professionals should be willing to use whatever
type of positive reinforcement works best for each pet, whether it is food, toys,
petting or other enjoyable activities. Don’t believe “he should work for me not for
food” myth which is a mis-representation of how treats and other reinforcement are
used in training.

9. Look for trainers and behavior consultants who recognize the importance of people
working with their own dogs under their direction, rather than sending the dog
somewhere for a professional trainer to train.

10. Behavior consulting is different from general obedience training. Multiple or weekly
visits by behavior consultants may not be necessary. Many problem behaviors won’t
be seen during a behavior consulting appointment (e.g. house-soiling), but behavior consultants should have other means to follow-up with owners and help them
implement the behavior modification plan.

11. Because of the extremely common myths and misconceptions surrounding the idea of
“dominance” and the importance of being “alpha” over a dog, look for trainers and
behavior consultants who do not focus on these ideas. The majority of behavior
problems in dogs have nothing to do with “dominance”, and recommendations based
on this idea often make problems much worse.

12. Avoid anyone who guarantees results. Pets are living creatures and no one knows
enough about their behavior to guarantee outcomes. Some trainers and behavior
consultants may guarantee satisfaction with their professional services, which is a
different thing.

13. Observe a training class. Are the dogs and people enjoying themselves? Talk to
participants to see if they are comfortable with the training methods used. If a trainer
won’t let you sit in on a class, don’t enroll in class. For confidentiality and safety
reasons, it will be unlikely a behavior consultant would allow a pet owner to sit in on
a consultation with another client. Instead, ask the behavior consultant for references,
such as from veterinarians or shelters that use their services, or from former clients
who have given permission to share information.

14.If either a trainer or behavior consultant tells you to do something to or with your dogthat you don’t feel comfortable with - don’t do it! People should not be intimidated,
bullied or shamed into doing something they believe is not in the best interest of their
dogs. Dog owners should not allow anyone to work directly with the dog unless they
first tell owners what they are going to do. Don’t be afraid to tell any trainer or
behavior consultant to stop if they are doing something to that dog that you feel is
harmful.

15. Because behavior problems can have medical causes, look for behavior consultants
who encourage you to first consult with a veterinarian. Be wary of trainers or
behavior consultants who insist on diet changes or alternative homeopathic remedies
without relying on input from veterinarians.

16. No matter how good the trainer or behavior consultant is, if owners don’t follow
through with practice either in their everyday lives with their pets, or with special
practice sessions, they won’t get the results they want.
The more a certain event or environment is
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">paired with a particular consequence, the stronger the association. This type of learning is called “classical conditioning” and represents reflexive or automatic behavior, rather than intentional behavior.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">While clicker training initially employs classical conditioning, it quickly becomes
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">operant conditioning as soon as the animal intentionally repeats an action in order to earn
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">a reward. Training through operant conditioning results in purposeful behavior, while
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">training through classical conditioning results in habitual behavior.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The difference between an animal that behaves with purpose, rather than by habit, is vast.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Clicker trained or operantly conditioned animals try to learn new behaviors. They
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">remember behaviors even years later because they were aware of them as they learned
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">them, rather than acquiring them without awareness. They develop confidence because
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">they have control over the consequences of their actions. They are enthusiastic because
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">they expect those consequences to be pleasurable.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Why is a clicker used?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The essential difference between clicker training and other reward-based training is that
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">the animal is told exactly which behavior earned it a reward. This information is
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">communicated with a distinct and unique sound, a click, which occurs at the same time as
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">the desired behavior. The reward follows.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Without hearing a click during an action, an animal may not connect the reward with that
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">action. Or, the animal may associate the reward with another, unwanted action. With the
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">click, a trainer can precisely “mark” behavior so that the animal knows exactly what it
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">was doing. That’s why clicker trainers call the click an “event marker.” The click also
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">bridges or connects the behavior and its reward, and so is also called a “bridging signal.”
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Why use the click? Why not just a word?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">A click is more powerful for training than a spoken word because it is not a sound heard
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">by the animal in other circumstances. It means one thing only: a reward is coming
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">because of what you did when you heard the click. It can be produced instantly and at the
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">exact moment a behavior occurs. Even a very quick and subtle behavior, the twitch of an
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">ear for example, can be clicked.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Unlike our voices, which can say the same word in different ways, and so express
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">different emotions or meanings each time, the click sounds the same every time it is
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">heard; its meaning never varies. Humans are highly verbal creatures, but our pets are not.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">It can be difficult for them to pick out a single word from the stream of meaningless
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">words they hear us speak every day. The click’s meaning, however, is always clear. It is
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">always directed at the animal, and it is always good news.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The clarity with which a click enables trainers to communicate with their animals has a
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">profound effect on their relationships. Their level of interaction increases, and trainer and animal become more interesting and fun for each other.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">How does clicker training work?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The trainer clicks at the moment the behavior occurs: the horse raises its hoof, the trainer clicks simultaneously. The dog sits, the trainer clicks. Clicking is like taking a picture of the behavior the trainer wishes to reinforce. After “taking the picture,” the trainer gives the animal something it likes, usually a small piece of food but sometimes play, petting, or other rewards.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Very soon (sometimes within two or three clicks), an animal will associate the sound of
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">the click with something it likes: the reward. Since it wishes to repeat that pleasurable
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">experience, it will repeat the action it was doing when it heard the click.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Any behavior can be trained with any animal following these three simple steps:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">1. Get the behavior.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">2. Mark the behavior.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">3. Reinforce the behavior.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">How do clicker trainers ask for behaviors?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Clicker trainers differ from traditional trainers in that they wait until the behavior is well understood by the animal before using a command or “cue.” A cue is the name of a
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">behavior, such as “sit,” or a hand movement or other clear signal. Until the animal knows
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">what the behavior is, any name for it would be meaningless.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">When the animal has been clicked several times for a behavior, and then confidently
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">repeats the behavior, showing that it knows exactly what earns it a click and a reward, it
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">is ready to learn the name of the behavior. Clicker trainers call this “introducing the cue.”
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">To teach the animal the name of the behavior, or the cue, the trainer says or signals the
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">cue before the animal repeats the behavior. After several repetitions, the trainer begins to click and reward when the animal does the behavior, but only after the cue is given. No
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">click is given if the animal does the behavior without being given the cue first. The
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">animal quickly learns to listen or watch for its cue, which tells it: If you do this behavior now, you will get a click and earn a reward.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">What if the animal does not obey the cue?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Clicker trained animals want to perform behaviors for which they have been rewarded in
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">the past. If they understand the meaning of the cue and desire the reward, they will
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">perform the behavior.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">If they do not perform the behavior, clicker trainers do not assume that the animal is
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">“disobeying.” Instead the trainer asks the following questions:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">1. Does the animal know the meaning of the cue?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">2. Does the animal know the meaning of the cue in the environment in which it was
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">first taught, but not in the environment in which it was given?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">3. Is the reward for doing the behavior sufficiently desired by the animal?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">After answering those questions, the clicker trainer revises the training process to be sure
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">that the animal knows the meaning of the cue in all environments, regardless of
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">distractions, and feels rewarded for the behavior.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Why don’t clicker trainers use punishment as well as rewards?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">A consequence of any behavior can be unpleasant as well as pleasant. So why shouldn’t
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">punishments follow unwanted behaviors, just as rewards follow wanted behaviors?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Research tells us that punishment may decrease the frequency of an unwanted behavior,
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">but usually results in producing another unwanted behavior. The results of punishment as
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">a training method are difficult to predict and to control.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">In addition, punishment is not usually identified with an event marker. It almost always
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">comes after the event and is rarely clearly connected with a specific behavior. In the
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">animal’s perception, punishment is a random, meaningless event. It is, therefore, less
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">effective than the combined use of an event marker and positive reinforcement in
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">changing behavior.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Clicker trainers also feel that their relationships with their animals are stronger and more
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">rewarding when they focus on the positive rather than the negative. Like the difference
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">between an animal behaving with intention rather than by habit, the difference in attitude
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">and enthusiasm between an animal that works to earn rewards rather than to avoid
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">punishment is vast.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">How can clicker training be used to get rid of behavior?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Clicker trainers allow unwanted behaviors to disappear through lack of reinforcement. If
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">a behavior is not rewarding to the animal, eventually it will disappear. If an unwanted
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">behavior persists, clicker trainers study the behavior to understand why it is reinforcing to
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">the animal. Sometimes the behavior reinforces itself: a barking dog is less bored than a
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">quiet dog. The barking is its own reward. The clicker trainer provides this dog with an
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">alternate wanted behavior to replace the unwanted behavior.Dog need more activity, or perhaps quiet resting for longer and longer periods can become a rewarded behavior. Then the clicker trainer would teach the dog a cue for “silence.”
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Do clickers and treats need to be used for every behavior, forever?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">No. Once a behavior is learned and on cue, there’s usually no need to click, as the animal
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">understands the behavior. Clicker trainers can maintain the behavior by replacing
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">specially good treats with occasional and less intensive rewards including a pat or praise.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Learned cues and behaviors are also maintained by real-life rewards: for example sitting
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">quietly at the door is rewarded by opening the door so that the dog can have a walk.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Clicker trainers then save clicks and treats for the next new thing they want to train.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Can clicker training be used with any animal?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Yes. First widely used by dolphin trainers who needed a way to teach behavior without
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">using physical force, operant conditioning (the scientific term for clicker training) can be
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">and has been successfully employed with animals of all sizes and species, both
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">domesticated and wild, young and old; all breeds of dogs and puppies, cats, birds,
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">leopards, rats, rabbits, chinchillas, fish, and more.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Clicker trainers who learn the underlying principles have at their disposal a powerful set
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">of tools that enable them to analyze behaviors, modify existing methods for individual
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">animals, and create new methods where none previously existed. This flexibility allows
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">the tools of clicker training to be re-invented in new forms that work in a range of
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">situations, and for an infinite variety of animals.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The same principles have also been applied to training for athletes, dancers, skaters, and
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">other people. Called “TAGteach,” this form of training uses a click as a marker signal to
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">teach precise physical motions quickly, accurately, and positively.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Is clicker training a training method or a philosophy?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Sometimes people are surprised by the enthusiasm and dedication clicker trainers have
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">for their method. These trainers may have first started learning to click as a way of
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">training their dog, but soon realized that the fundamental principles of clicker training
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">could be applied to other areas of their lives. Changing one’s focus from the negative to
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">the positive can certainly be a life-changing event.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8073233787487844013.post-37820644341138003422011-06-04T07:58:00.000-07:002011-06-04T07:58:54.529-07:00How To Train Your Dog For Search And Rescue Operation

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">OBEDIENCE
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Search and rescue dogs are obedient dogs, under control at all times. The successful dog/handler team must complete the following exercises individually and together with other teams whereby only hand signals are used.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<ul style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: left;">
Heel, jog at heel, sit and down at heel.

Stay or down on recall.

Sit at a distance of 10 meters.

Down at a distance of 10 meters.

Finish at heel position.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
AGILITY
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">This profile is an extension of obedience. It also develops the dog physically, preparing it to deal with trenuous tasks encountered in rescue operations. The agility course consists of a number of jumps one meter high, a window jump, a vertical wall, suspension plank, balance beam, a culvert, and an "A" frame ramp. The dog must successfully negotiate all of these hurdles off leash with the handler at a moderate jog. The dog is under control at all times at the handler's left side.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">TRACKING
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The purpose of this profile is to provide a qualified tracking dog to assist police in finding missing persons and possible evidence. Dogs are trained to follow a track of human scent and crushed vegetation using
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">their magnificent nose. The dog's nose is far superior to man's. The total number of olfactory cells in a human is about 5 million. The dog has 125 - 200 million. Its sensitivity is amazing. The dog can detect some odors at as little as one part in a trillion.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">A greater proportion of the dog's brain is devoted to the sense of smell, unlike in humans whose size of the olfactory area has decreased and the thinking part has increased. For this reason, when training, BELIEVE YOUR DOG as he is the best judge of what he smells! The necessary equipment for the tracking dog consists of a non-restrictive harness and a 20 - 25 foot long line, preferably made of leather. The dog is trained to follow a single human scent, disregarding all else. The successful candidate must complete a 45 minute old track set by one person in a rural environment.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The track includes:
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<ul style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: left;">
2 road crossings

3 scent related articles

the dog must indicate right and left 45degree turns

1 dead end

cross tracks - human

20 meters on low scent area such as gravel

animal scent distraction

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">RETRIEVING
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The SAR dog must retrieve articles found on a track belonging to the person the dog is to find. The dog should be taught to retrieve a variety of articles including those made of leather, wood, cloth, as well as glass and metal objects. For certification purposes the dog must sit at handler's side, stay while the dumbbell (wooden) is thrown 10 meters. On the "fetch" command , the dog must pick up the object, return to the handler, sit in front position and hold the article for 30 seconds. On command "out" the dog gives up the article and goes to the heel position, again on command.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">SEARCHING
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Searching involves air scenting to locate a missing person. This is opposed to tracking where the dog's head is low, near the ground,following the scent left by a person's footprints. The handler must pay close attention to wind direction when searching. Scent from a lost person or article will be carried to the dog by the wind. Therefore, it is beneficial for the dog/handler team to work into the wind.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Testing in this profile involves:
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<ul style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: left;">
A search for a concealed person in a rural environment. The search includes bush and open terrain approximately 400 meters by 400 meters. The search is to be completed within 20 minutes.

A search for 2 medium sized, well scented articles in a rural area. Articles are concealed about 24 hours before the start of the search. The search area is approximately 200 meters by 200 meters. The 2 articles are to be located within 20 minutes. Hand signals and voice commands are used to direct the dog.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">How to correctly use food rewards in training is part of the broader issue of deciding what methods to use to train dogs or to change problem behavior. Choke chains, snap chokes, and to a lesser degree pinch collars, are widely used training devices based on the principle of negative reinforcement. Negative reinforcement can teach new behavior because by behaving correctly, the dog can escape or avoid the choking or pinching action of the collar.

For example, to teach a dog to sit with this method, the leash is jerked upwards when the command is given, causing the collar to become uncomfortable. When the dog sits, the leash is loosened and sitting is negatively reinforced because by doing so the dog “turned off” the pressure on his neck.

Choke chains are also often used to attempt to punish a variety of undesirable behaviors. We recently had a call from someone who wanted to know how to use a choke chain to get her dog to stop snapping at people. With this approach, when the dog snaps, the leash is jerked and the collar tightens as punishment for snapping.

The timing, intensity and duration of any negative stimuli like these are crucial to their effectiveness and appropriateness. When aversive training procedures are too intense, go on for too long or are not closely connected with the problem behavior they can turn into abusive and cruel treatment.

Using punishment to the point that a dog urinates or defecates, using choke chains to lift dogs off their feet or hang them or continuing to give repeated collar corrections for minutes after the misbehavior has occurred are not appropriate training procedures but abusive treatment.

It is difficult to abuse a dog using positive reinforcement. At worst, using positive reinforcement incorrectly can teach undesirable behavior; using aversive methods incorrectly can result in cruel treatment, physical injury, and produce a dog who is fearful and aggressive.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Our advice to pet owners when choosing a training method:

1) If a particular procedure is unacceptable to you - don’t allow yourself to be forced into using it,

2) If you witness what you believe to be cruel training procedures, report it to a state certified cruelty investigator and be sure to obtain names of other witnesses,

3) Before you give anyone permission to work with your dog, be sure you know what methods will be used and don’t be afraid to tell them to stop if you are concerned for your dog’s well-being and

4) If you want to use positive reinforcement methods in training your dog, seek out people who use them.

<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Dog Training<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> is a technique to teach your dog to understand the commands given by you and behaving accordingly.It is best to hire dog trainers who can teach your dog to be well behaved and respond properly and correctly to your commands.Generally when you bring in a new pet dog then you must train him to be your best friend rather then to be an annoyance around your house.Dogs have natural inborn instincts which help them to cooperate with their fellow dogs. Many domestic dogs can correctly instinctively interpret signals given by their owner and respond to signals as well.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The Basic Commands which you can teach your dog to respond to is as follows:

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">1.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Sit
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">2.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Down
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">3.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Recall
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">4.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Stay
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">5.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Close
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">6.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Heel
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">7.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Up

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">People either hire a professional Dog Trainer or Join Dog Training Classes which enables a dog Owner and the Dog to know more about each other.Classes are designed to help Socialize a Dog to other people and Dogs.You may also attend group classes but again they may not be available until your puppy has completed all its vaccinations.The dog training may involve 'Reward and Punishment' technique.But if you are an individual trainer then it must be kept in the mind that your dog should feel at ease while training is being done.The main thing which should be kept in mind is that Dog Training requires time and patience.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">According to Learning Theory there are four important messages that the handler can send the dog:

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">1. <b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Reward or release marker<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> which implies correct behavior. This signal tells the dog that you have earned a reward.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">2.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> Keep going signal (KGS)<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> which implies Correct behavior and continue and you will earn more reward.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">3.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> No reward marker (NRM)<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> implies that your behavior is incorrect.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">4.<b style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> Punishment marker<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> implies that your behavior is incorrect and that you have earned punishment.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
